Yatton RFC
4 October 2005
Imperial 3rd’s 8 Yatton 3rd’s 55
The conditions were not conducive to open running rugby and for the first minutes of the game the veteran Imperial pack made good use of their strength, by pressuring Yatton into conceding an early penalty to go three points down.
The combination of experience and youth in the
Yatton always had promise and this was first shown by a strong run down the
wing from James Webb, and good support put John Parsons in for his first try of
the match. Webb featured again shortly after by getting over himself
after Justin Andrews had joined the line to give him space.
It was the turn of the forwards next when Tom Rowe
battled through after a good driving move.
The younger players featured again when Matt Gooding
made a strong run mid field to feed John ‘Geordie’ Weatherall for a simple
touchdown with Stef Vaughn adding extra points.
In the second half the Yatton combination
were well on top of the persistent but tiring Imperial side. Tom Rowe featured
again when he picked up a loose ball close to the line, and made a strong lunge
to get his second try, with Justin Andrews converting. Another midfield break
by Matt Gooding from the back row released his backs to deliver some good
handling and putting John Parsons in the clear to run the entire opponents
half. Vaughn further increased the lead with the kick.
It was the turn of Geordie Weatherall to get his
second after combined forwards/ backs play, Andrews adding yet more points.
The match was turning into a rout but Imperial were
still battling as well as they could, and after conceding two more tries from
Mike Plimmer and Justin Andrews, they fought back to get the final score
themselves through the Imperial legend, Kevin Hickory.
The younger Yatton players excelled in this game,
providing the pace, enthusiasm and skill to
complement
the experience that is inherent in the Yatton 3rd team core.
