‘Adjudged Forward Pass stops Celebration’.
Brixham’s added pace and Yatton’s poor performance in the first half gave no indication of the possible final score.
Within minutes of the start a home side mistake was pounced on by the visitors and finished with first team debutante wing Guy Marlow’s try in the corner.
Yatton clawed back to take the lead after two penalty conversions toward the end of the first quarter. On the 30 minute mark a penalty conversion and a try 5 minutes later thanks to their effective and speedy back division put Brixham 13-6 ahead at halftime.
Yatton broke from their own 22 minutes after the break, wing Chris Smeagol-Edwards having made the ground, Tony Hill playing at outside centre finished off under the posts and took the conversion to put the scores level at 13-13.
But Yatton’s renewed confidence was countered by Brixham’s ability to use the uncertain wind and at 55 minutes a gifted penalty in front the posts put the visitors in front again.
Minutes later Yatton levelled with a long range penalty from out wide as Brixham were made to falter in midfield.
With more the 15 minutes to go each side could see the possibility of victory but a Yatton penalty attempt was dragged wide by the wind and Brixham’s drop goal failed.
5 minutes before full-time Yatton supporter’s celebration of a try was halted when looking up to see the referee emphatically signalling a forward pass.
Play became feisty later on and both captains were sent to the sin-bin representing their respective teams having been warned earlier. Yatton was awarded the resultant penalty but again the wind dragged the high ball inches wide. The final whistle went as Yatton were encamped on Brixham’s try line with a long series of close quarter play.
This Saturday Yatton’s 1st XV are
once again at home against 3rd placed Avonmouth who are aiming for the
play-offs. Being the last league home match of the season it is also Presidents
Day when President John Crew invites guests and all Vice Presidents to a pre
match sumptuous lunch; his 1st Lady having dusted off her Mrs
Beaton’s cookbook and produced her famously light pastry pie toppings.
