Yatton Scorers; Try
‘Nailbiter
finish against bottom club’
Walcot maybe this leagues bottom club but they gave Yatton a torrid time as the visitors lost their shape in the second half.
At nine minutes a basic attacking error at the base of the scrum by Yatton, inside Walcot’s 22, nearly gave the home side a break away try from a slick interception. But seconds’ later amends were made as Captain Nic Garnham elusively carved through and gave Tony Hill an easy conversion. Minutes later Walcots No8 was yellow carded but Yatton failed to turn the added pressure into points until Hill slotted away a penalty seconds before the player returned to the pitch.
On the half hour, and one of the very few occasions that the travellers attempted to shift the ball through the backs, Glyn Jones was able to use his pace and touchdown in the corner.
At the break Yatton were on 15 points with no reply and looking comfortable. But within ten minutes a refreshed Walcot broke through defensive tackles to under the posts and came away with seven points.
At the start of the last quarter the game was livening up and in total contrast to the first half activity. Stiff resistance to close quarter work by the attacking pack denied the travellers on Walcot’s try line. As the play swept back to Yatton’s 22 an easy penalty conversion was conceded for diving over, putting the home side within one try of an unexpected draw or win.
Frantic efforts were then made by both sides with a ricocheting ball and pop passing to opposition players while the small group of home side supporters became vocal. But after six minutes of injury time there was no change in the score line and Yatton secured two valuable points.
