‘Out of sorts Yatton
wilt badly’
Once again glorious sunshine met the travelling Yatton 1st XV at Torquay’s promenade pitch and again they received a drubbing in this their second league year visit. Crabs and a bottle of wine were available in the pitch side raffle but there were no enthusiastic takers from the travelling supporters and some females went shopping at half time.
Fielding no less than seven
changes from the published players including veteran Dave ‘Pablo’ Keating who
was persuaded back from
Yatton missed a penalty within five minutes and, against the early run of play, Torquay’s long kick ahead was chased down and grounded inches inside the dead ball area while the travelers defence was left wondering where the winger had come from.
Minutes later a penalty for each side kept Yatton in the chase and it seemed possible that the visitors might prove the pundits wrong because their attacks were putting on pressure.
But at 25 minutes Torquay repeated its early try, this time leaving the winger enough to be able to run around and leave an easy conversion. Seconds later a penalty just added more to the misery with the score line 18-3.
Some relief came and rye smiles were added, among knowledgeable spectators, when Keating couldn’t resist a drop-goal opportunity in front the posts, but it was real penetration that was lacking in the Yatton side.
Torquay’s score was pulled out into clear water just be for half time as they landed another penalty conversion and Yatton missed one. 21-6 at the turn round. Basic errors were costing the travellers and the home sides back division were intent on shrugging off their two previous league defeats and developing their fitness as tackles were missed. Minutes into the restart a backline breakout from their own 22 for the homside, went through unopposed.
But Nic Garnham’s blindside touchdown for Yatton from an attacking scrum at least put the visitors into double figures.
The last quarter was all Torquay who had their tails up and wanted to turn it on for the surprisingly small amount of home side support; three tries were ‘walked’ through and converted including a No2 who outpaced the visitors defence. There was much to talk about for Yatton on the homeward coach.
This Saturday Yatton
1st XV entertain the Cornish side St Ives, who have just signed a 17
year old American, in the EDF Cup. VP Lunch followed by Kick-off 2.30 pm
