‘Shorney Drop
Goal seals win’.
St Mary’s had the advantage of wind and occasional rain in the first half and home side Yatton made mistakes straight from the kick-off.
In set pieces well-drilled Marys had a definite edge through out. Unusually Yattons pack seemed lumbering and slow to breakdowns.
Marys first penalty conversion through No9 Steve Plummer was kicked within five minutes and while two missed penalties were dragged wide by the wind for Yatton, it was not until the last five minutes of an otherwise scrappy first half that the visitors claimed two more penalties in quick succession. Deep in first-half injury time Yatton John Shorney’s penalty put them on the score board. The score turning around at 3-9.
At 55 minutes, Yatton’s prolonged close quarter attack at Marys tryline corner post was eventually resisted as the visitors mauled their way to nearly midfield.
Minutes later Yatton’s score edged closer with a penalty and within seconds Marys were back up the field but their penalty conversion attempt bounced back into play off an upright.
With just over ten minutes to go, Yatton finally gave the large home side support something to really cheer about as they momentarily clicked as a unit and wing Glen Jones collected at pace to spin his way past a tackle and touchdown.
At eighty minutes, No 10 Shorney created some comfort in the score line for his home side when he claimed three more valuable points with his drop-gaol.
Despite valiant efforts by both sides no further points came from the eight minutes of injury time
