St Mary’s OB      vs      Yatton

     10                                12

Yatton Scorers     - Tries: M Harris, N Garnham Cons D Keating.

Yatton’s defence secures 1st win.

Despite the fact that St Mary’s scrum seemed to have the extra push, it was Yatton’s pack in defence which gave them the win.

Each side traded missed penalties in the first quarter.

Minutes later scrum half Steve Plummer broke from the base of an attacking scrum just outside Yatton’s 22 and, at the tackle, slipped the ball to his lumpy hooker Paul Ford for Saints first try.

Ten minutes later in open play, centre Darren Stone cut through on the angle, enabling his co-centre Mike Harris to cross over and level things for the visitors.

During first half injury time Yatton’s defence held out on their try line, causing the home side to run out of time in their attack.

Minutes into the second half, Yatton scrum half Nic Garnham broke from the base of a retreating scrum in an identical field position to Plummer’s in the first half.

But this time Garnham needed no help as he weaved to under the posts. Dave Keating converted.

St Marys looked dangerous on the wings but Yatton’s tackling held the score line.

At 65 minutes, Yatton were made to defend four consecutive five metre scrums, during which Garnham was yellow carded. On the fifth attacking scrum, Yatton grounded the ball first and the pressure was finally relieved with the 22 drop out.

St Marys desperate attacks in front of frustrated home side support caused them errors until seconds into injury time Adam Hobbs collected at pace to touchdown.

But their was no conversion for St Marys and again Yattons defence held giving Yatton their first league victory since gaining promotion last season.
