Away defence keeps score low

Yatton swapped their top of the league position for second place with Barton Hill last Saturday.

Despite large patches of wet quagmire on a ‘second’ pitch without the regulation ‘supporters barrier’, the game was played at an electric pace especially in the forwards.

With the slope advantage Barts were on the board after 5 minutes when Matt Richards penalty conversion slide in off an upright.

Using the skills they know best, and which suited the conditions, Barts powerhouse pack grounded the ball through Adam May after working it down field. Putting the home side at

 8-0, after only 15 minutes.

Although Barts had the edge in the scrums Yatton coped well even when sliding backwards and their occasional excursions to within the oppositions 22 always looked menacing.

Despite having the major share of possession, together with Yatton inexplicably deciding to try and run out of their own 22, Barts were not able to penetrate their visitors defence again until the 60th minute. Inevitably a rolling maul up the slope gave Bill Sweet his try and Richards dissected the posts.

Homeside supporters thought that surely the floodgates would now open and put Barton Hill solidly in front and undoubtedly number one in the league.

But their visitors were resilient, even with a few regular players absent. Yatton finding some grass and relatively drained patches were able to use their mobility. With 10 minutes to go Centre Mike Harris finished off in the corner a quick tap penalty. Leaving both sets of supporters wondering about the likely result of the rematch scheduled for the last Saturday in March next year.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV entertains Sidmouth in the next round of the EDF Senior Vase. The visitors are currently 4th in Western Counties West.
