Yatton sink Old Reds’

After a faulty start Yatton 1st XV eased themselves, rightfully into a mid table position and condemned Old Redcliffians to certain relegation.

Yatton had advantage of wind and slope but it was all Old Reds for the first 20 minutes.

At six minutes No 8 Tony Bray touched down for the home side and Craig Owen converted.

Minutes after with a Yatton Player yellow carded ex-Scottish under 21 prop Craig McGrath crashed through to put Old Reds at 12-0

However at 21 minutes centre Tom Jackson received ball at pace broke through and crossed over. Sam Osborne converted.

Seconds later, wing Phil Morgan collected the pass from Osborne after Dave Keating had chipped ahead. Osbornes conversion put Yatton 2 points in front.

Five minutes before halftime Mike Harris barged off tackles to touch down and the conversion gave the visitors clear water in the scoreline. The following Osborne penalty conversion seemed to be enough.

But Old Reds know how to play their pitch and after four consecutive lineouts during which the sides had to contend with a difficult wind, Bray crashed over.

Minutes later Morgan’s individual try of the match came as the pinned down visitors attempted to break out of their 22. Morgan collected the pass, broke a tackle and raced up the slope, with a single support, to touchdown and regain the points difference.

Old Reds, however, were out for this win to stand any chance of avoiding relegation. With 20 minutes to go another lineout drive saw McGrath ground the ball.

Six minutes later a rare Yatton defensive error gave Old Reds wing Jack Gleed his try. The long range conversion brought delight to the large home side support, levelling the scores at 29-29 with 5 minutes to go.

Yatton’s ability to pick and drive worked them out of the danger area and up the slope. Old Reds received a yellow card and Osborne’s penalty put Yatton back in front by a whisker.

An injury time trying saving tackle by fullback Osborne kept the visitors safe and Yatton finished on Old Reds tryline.
