It was a big day for Yatton, with RFU Vice-President Bob Rogers opening their new changing room extension, with a pig roast after.

During the first 15 minutes, Yatton failed to finish off their try scoring opportunities and their visitors had not read the script.

An odd omen of the game’s outcome happened when a clearance kick from League sailed cleanly through an open skylight in the new extension and broke a glass pane in the French door in the gymnasium.

Yatton were weakened as their No 8 was yellow carded at the end of the quarter.

Steve Stokes grounded the ball from Leagues driving maul.

Five minutes later Sam Osborne put Yatton on the board with a penalty.

Under pressure, Yatton succumbed to a try and conversion when Russ Dunn charged down an attempted clearance kick yards out.

Moments late, tempers flared in this no quarter given encounter. Minutes before half-time, Osborne’s second penalty kept Yatton in contention and League had a player sin-binned.

Ten minutes into the second half, League’s try line pressure resulted in the referee awarding a penalty try, with Gavin Rea’s conversion putting League 19-6 in front.

Seconds later, Mike Harris broke through tackles to cross under the posts and Osborne’s conversion put the home side back within six points.

To the delight of hundreds of home supporters, fired-up Yatton edged in front for the first time 10 minutes later as they returned the pack power tables on League.

Neil Hynam emerged with the ball from a ruck and maul pushover, Osborne’s conversion putting the score at the slenderest 20-19.

Yatton had a player yellow-carded and shortly after missed a penalty and unusually three drop goals attempts. But League had not read the script for the day and Rea’s penalty settled the outcome.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV are on League duty away against Stroud for the first time ever.
