For just over a month now Yatton 1st XV have struggled to find that cohesive spark that gave them such a blistering start to the season.
Valuable league points have been given away to basement clubs in acts of generosity but from this Saturday such early Christmas presents could begin to show their true cost in Yatton’s league standing.
This Saturday Yatton face at home League and Cup high flying Walcot and they face them again in the away fixture just before Christmas. Between those two matches they travel to undefeated Cheltenham North.
But Yatton 1st XV, if they are not always successful, they are generally entertaining and frequently a perverse lot who tend to turn it on against ‘big’ names.
Perhaps the aberration of the last 5 weeks, including last Saturdays second half, will just prove to have been their wrong month of the season.
Last Saturday Yatton resisted early pressure and did well by only conceding a penalty conversion after 10 minutes.
An end to end game then developed with Yatton solid enough in the scrums and quick around the park but with the tendency to allow players to become isolated.
Harlequins with territorial advantage managed to force anther penalty seconds before halftime.
Again Yatton faltered and allowed Harlequins the comfort of a penalty conversion and converted try all within the first 6 minutes after the break.
But Yatton regrouped and can count themselves unlucky not to achieve some reward, but such is life when desperate catch up rugby is called for away from home in a cold setting sun.
Two converted tries from forward platforms beneath the posts in the last quarter gave Harlequins their comprehensive win.
Kick off this Saturday at 2-30pm, The Park,
Yatton. This match against Walcot will be preceded by a, no doubt, voice full
Vice Presidents luncheon.
