‘Yatton beat bogey and will be Topping Out’

Ever since achieving promotion and as the first league match of each season Yatton have been instructed to play Old Centralians. Apart from the first occasion they have always been the loosing side since until, that is, last Saturday. In oppressive heat Yatton started with the advantage of the slope but other than a penalty conversion within the first minute there were no other points.

Both sides try scoring chances were stopped yards before the line. Craig Andersons penalty for Old C’s brought the scores level at the end of the first quarter. Moments of early season comedy occured and missed conversions from both sides kept them level until halftime.

10 minutes into the second half a converted penalty for Old C’s edged them in front and shortly after Rich Pinkney received loose Yatton ball at the back of a lineout and galloped into the corner from the halfway line. Anderson’s conversion from far out added icing on the cake as far as homeside supporters were concerned as it brought the scoreline to 13-3.

Old C’s then began to play their sloping pitch as well as they know it to snuff out any attacks by the visitors for the next 20 minutes.

With ten minutes of normal time to go Yatton’s backline breakout from their own 22 was finished off under the posts by Nic Garnham and Sam Osbornes conversion roused the travellers. 5 minutes later Keating’s break was well supported from the halfway line and the touch down was slotted away by Osborne.

An embattled and exhausted Yatton side was then forced to make junior side errors, but they weathered the storm even though nearly seven minutes of added time was played.
